Congratulations! You have officially launched your accounting career!

It’s time to lay the foundation for your future in accounting and that means starting with the basics.

Often recent graduates set unrealistic expectations about the level in which they will enter the job market. With any entry level job you must start from the bottom and work your way up. Initially, you will most likely be given repetitive tasks with limited responsibility. These jobs will become progressively more difficult the longer you are able to demonstrate your accounting abilities, work ethic and understanding of the company. With realistic expectations you will gain the experience within the company and will develop the skills required for higher positions.

Entry level accounting jobs are the foundation of a strong career. This position is important as they are responsible for keeping and/or recording financial transactions of a firm. Other responsibilities of the position include overseeing accounts payable, preparing financial report for the firm, overseeing payrolls, preparing financial reports and balance sheets.

Questions

When you start your first job in accounting you will undoubtedly have countless questions. The most effective way to have a greater understanding of your company is by researching them prior. By researching the company prior you will gain a greater understanding of the company, their intentions, their operations, priorities and what they expect you as an employee to offer to them. A willingness to ask questions is key. This will help you better understand your job role and will also give the impression that you are a keen learner and are genuinely interested. If you receive constructive criticism from colleagues it is important to acknowledge their concerns and work towards improving your performance. Receiving constructive feedback is essential in growing within a field, particularly when you have limited experience.

Relationships

Positive relationships within the workplace are essential in the functionality of a business. Business connections and relationships allow you to work closely together with others to achieve mutual success.
